is there way gracefully remove visitors site rather putting site maintenance , booting out? in particular thinking of ecommerce site there might carts open, or checkouts in progress, suppose apply other sites.
ideally envisage system redirect new traffic maintenance page; allow site "empty" on period of time ... , have monitor of number of visitors , whether active.
does exist, or industry standard workflow? maintenance in middle of night work degree, , not on international site.
i had maintenance on ecommerce site yesterday , used sitewide notice ( available default many shopping cart systems; or achieved using basic html/css if not ) .... made prominent , put clear start time maintenance on notice ... started when said would.
in absence of more foolproof system lo-fi approach seemed work – , maybe that's best industry can @ present. i'll leave here answer unless comes better.
