android - Adding labels to Menu icon in Action Bar -

at moment have pretty standard action bar menu icon. i'd this, overlay

i tried little experiment using toolbar , going this, no luck:

toolbar.setnavigationicon(r.drawable.ic_document_hit);

any thoughts?
